Description:

ATIS is committed to the provision of an intellectual forum where scholars from different regional and disciplinary backgrounds can debate issues relating the translation and other forms of cross-cultural communication as they continue to develop in the 21st century.

Anyone interested in the activities of IATIS can become an individual member, entitled to all membership benefits, upon payment of a membership fee. Membership is always for the calendar year in which the application and payment are made. In recognition of the uneven distribution of wealth and financial constraints in different areas of the world, and in response to requests to address this issue made by IATIS membership during the General Assembly held in Seoul in August 2004, the Membership Committee has devised a scheme consisting of four Membership Fee Bands. Each country is thus assigned to one of the four bands on the basis of its GDP. These bands are reviewed annually in accordance with the latest GDP figures published by The CIA World Factbook 2008 and will be updated each year in the IATIS website by 31st December. Individual Membership IATIS members from Band 1 countries pay full fees, whereas members living in Band 2 , Band 3 , and Band 4 countries are entitled to discounted fees.

Group Membership For institutions (universities, associations, professional groups, etc.) wishing to join IATIS as a group of 5 to 20 individuals, the full membership fee will be reduced by 50% for each member within the group. As with individual membership, the discount is calculated on the basis of the country where the institution is located. Extra discounts are available to groups of 21 to 40 individuals. The IATIS membership rates for 2008 have not increased from the previous years. At the beginning of 2007, IATIS added £3 to the full Band 1 individual membership fee, which went from £35 to £38. This extra £3 goes into a sponsorship fund to give members from disadvantaged countries in Band 4 the opportunity to be involved in IATIS.

For example individual membership from US (Band 1) if a translator pays by credit/debit cards will cost 38 GBP per year. Detailed information about membership fees per country and depending on membership level and payment method is available at http://www.iatis.org/content/membership/membership-register.php
