ALTA was founded in 1978 to provide essential services to literary translators from all languages and create a professional forum for the exchange of ideas on the art and craft of literary translation. ALTA's national offices are located at the Center for Translation Studies at The University of Texas at Dallas. Each year, ALTA presents the National Translation Award to an outstanding translation of literature into English published in the United States by an American publisher in the previous year.

Membership Information ALTA invites the active participation of all those interested in literary translation. By purchasing membership, you will become a member of the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) for one year. Your one year membership entitles you to receive a copy of the two Translation Reviews publications. Membership fees range from 20 USD (student) to 150 USD (institutional) per year.
