Career Coaches (PARW/CC) sets the gold standard in the industry. Hence, this should be the first certification that an aspiring resume writer should obtain. A resume writer has to be an active member of PARW/CC and pass their stringent tests.
Professional Resume Writing and Research Association (PRWRA) consists of four levels to gain one's certification. Levels are based on a person's experience, training, and the number of examinations passed.
Nationally Certified Resume Writers (NCRW) has been noted to be the most difficult certification to attain. It is composed of a three-part examination. The test also includes resume and cover letter creation. Finally, people who have passed the examination need to maintain their certification through continuing education credits.

In addition, a resume writer should be attentive to detail and be analytical as well because they do not want to miss out on anything valuable that their customer has to offer. A resume writer must also be adept in writing. The manner in which a resume writer should develop is a straight-forward, brief and simple style. Thus, minimal word usage that effectively conveys the desired message becomes an essential skill. Therefore, concise language in the completed resume should clearly and accurately describe the customer by reflecting his or her capabilities in the best light possible.

Equally important is for resume writers to have excellent communication and interpersonal skill because resume writing will require them to contact and directly talk to their customers. This is done to assess their customer's potential and gain knowledge about the customer's past background and experience.

Lastly, a resume writer should stay abreast on trends regarding resume writing and job search. Thus, it will be helpful to have prior and current knowledge about recruitment methods being employed and in-depth information about different career fields.
